Mentoring - An Australian Success Story for Indigenous Youth

If you ever wanted a demonstration of the power of mentoring, this week's Australian Story, on ABC TV has it. Not just a heart warming anecdote but a case study that we can draw important lessons from. Jack Manning Bancroft started a mentoring program to pair university students with disadvantaged kids for their mutual benefit. AIME, the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience has helped hundreds of disadvantaged kids finish school and go on to university. Amongst it's high flying supporters is swim legend Ian Thorpe, who in turn gained support from major corporate players. My reflections and learning from this example of a successful mentoring program. It began with a clear vision and mission - to help Indigenous youth to finish school and go to university. It clearly aims at mutual benefit - mentors as well as mentorees develop as a result of the relationship. The program nearly fell over because of lack of funding. Successful mentoring programs require serious commitment of resources. It flourishes because it found the support of high profile champions. One person acting on their dream, enabled thousands to act on theirs. What do you think? Watch the repeat of Australian Story: Turning The Tables, on ABC TV Saturday 2 June, 12.30pm http://www.abc.net.au/austory/

I've been a graphic artist for more than 10 years now. I'm just rather a new comer to blogging and stumbled upon your blog while searching for design blog sites. I've got to tell you just how stimulated I am with your blog posts as well as the total high quality of your site. I hope I can produce a blog just like your own and will keep an eye on your blogposts with great focus. Thanks a lot for that creativity friend.

Thanks for sharing this, Ann. I always find inspiration in people who strive to make the lives of the underprivileged better. I hope they continue with their program and that more organisations will support their effort.
